A different manual, and a distinction that matters
Behavioral health organizations are governed by the NPSG chapter, with suicide-risk reduction at NPSG.15.01.01 — written with four segments, not five; the version with an extra segment is a common error worth not repeating. The authoritative manual is the 2026 CAMBHC, released in October 2025 and effective January 1, 2026, and this program is not yet subject to the Accreditation 360 restructuring that reorganized the hospital manual. NPSG.15.01.01’s own note states that noninpatient behavioral health settings and unlocked inpatient units do not need to be ligature resistant; the requirement in those settings is to assess for hazards, identify high-risk individuals, safeguard them, and educate staff about risks that were identified but not eliminated — explicitly not elimination.
Why it will change: the Joint Commission has stated that implementation dates for its remaining programs are still being determined. Any content asserting certainty about the behavioral-health timeline is claiming to know something the Joint Commission has not decided — so this article is date-stamped and will be re-verified on the Joint Commission’s mid-2026 announcements. That discipline is the point: the setting that is most likely to move is the one we most carefully date.
“If a vendor cites the hospital NPG chapter at a freestanding behavioral health organization, I know they pattern-matched instead of reading. Different manual, different clock.”
