What actually moved — and what it means for your page

EC.02.06.01 no longer governs. Security risks — including infant and pediatric abduction procedures — are now governed by National Performance Goal 11 (NPG.11.01.01), in the NPG chapter, not the Physical Environment chapter. NPG.11.01.01 EP 1 requires the hospital to control access to and from areas it identifies as security sensitive; EP 2 requires written policies and procedures for a security incident, including an infant or pediatric abduction, and closes with the words “Documentation is required.” Where EC.02.06.01’s safe-environment content landed in the PE chapter we do not assert: the Joint Commission’s own webinar gives an element-level mapping, but the authority is the full Disposition Report, which we have not pulled — so we make no claim of clean standard-to-standard succession, and we do not map it into PE.01.01.01, which is a buildings standard.

The Joint Commission’s own framing matters here. Its stated aim for the restructuring is shifting the focus “from observation of structure and process to outcome measures,” and it has said plainly that “while the NPG chapter is new, no new requirements have been introduced.” The obligations did not shrink; they were reorganized around demonstrable performance. That is the whole reason a page still citing EC.02.06.01 for a hospital in mid-2026 reads as out of date to the one reader you most need to trust you.

“The re-chaptering caught a lot of well-run programs flat-footed — not because the requirements changed, but because every reference document they had still pointed at the old numbers.”
